STATEMENT WORKS

Designed to anchor and define a space.

Wind-driven clouds cling to a serrated mountain peak, wrapping around its upper ridges as patches of blue begin to break open overhead. The backcountry of Glacier Park offers endless opportunity, whether you’re chasing light with a camera or chasing summits with tired legs. On this particular day, I set out early with both goals in mind. The climb was steep and demanding, but with every bit of elevation gained, the views grew wider and more rewarding. Just before reaching a saddle between two peaks, the dappled light and the moody clouds were just too much to resist so I stopped and took out my camera, carefully composing this scene. The mist and the light only lasted a minute or two before the clouds cleared and the magic was gone. A reminder of just how quickly the weather can change in the mountains. I packed up my gear and continued upward. When I reached the saddle, the wind was intense. I stopped for lunch, hunkering down in some rocks, using them as a shelter break from the cold. I used this time to evaluate whether it was safe to proceed or not. After a little while, the wind died down enough that I felt comfortable attempting the summit. By the time I reached the top, the clouds had returned, drifting in and out and revealing brief windows of the mountains and the vast, glacier-carved valleys below. I had the satisfaction of standing on the summit—and the reward of taking in the scene as it unfolded. Days like that, when the physical challenge and the creative pursuit come together, are hard to beat. — MOUNTAINS CALL

A small mountain creek winds its way through the rugged Beartooth Mountains after a passing summer rain shower. There is a feeling of freshness in the air following the rain. As the sun dips toward the horizon, a break in the clouds allows warm light to spill across a jagged, rocky peak towering above the stream. I was grateful to have scouted this composition earlier in the day. The thunderstorm that rolled through was intense, and I’d been hunkered down at camp, not expecting any chance of good light. When I noticed a break in the clouds, I grabbed my gear and hurried back to the creek. I waded into the cold water to line up the shot, just as the last light of day slipped through and briefly crowned the peak. It was one of those moments that almost never happens, but then it does. — AFTER THE RAIN

Looking at this photograph, I bet that you would be very surprised if I told you that just an hour before I captured it, the landscape had been completely obscured by thick smoke from nearby wildfires. Then, just before sunset, a strong wind swept through the valley and pushed the smoke out, slowly revealing clear skies overhead. As night fell, the Northern Lights slowly came alive, albeit only for a brief few minutes, over the Flathead Range. It was the kind of moment that reminds you nature doesn’t wait for anything—or anyone. — NORTHERN NIGHTS

As I stood there in a heavy snowfall, I watched as a large bull bison moved slowly through the storm. The snow was coming down so hard that his massive body began to lose definition, dissolving into shape and motion rather than detail. Watching him push forward made me realize just how adapted to the extremes these creatures are. What drew me in was how the storm stripped everything down, turning the bison into something almost abstract, yet undeniably powerful. I photographed this scene near the Lower Geyser Basin, where steam, snow, and silence come together in a way that feels uniquely Yellowstone.
