While scouting in the spring, I came across a series of rocky outcroppings that immediately felt right—an ideal place to document cougars. Trusting that instinct, I set a simple trail camera to monitor the area, with plans to return later with a more advanced setup if my hunch proved correct.
When I came back months later to review the footage, the results confirmed it: mountain lions were in fact using the area regularly. Among them was a female traveling with young kittens, which gave me a rare and compelling glimpse into their secretive lives.
Excited with the possibilities, I returned with one of my high-tech remote camera systems and carefully studied the terrain. Tucked between a rocky ledge and a large tree, I found a narrow pinch point—a natural funnel I suspected the cats were using as they moved through the landscape. It was the perfect place to position the camera.
